1808-1888Description
This recipe book was compiled in Newbury, Massachusetts, between 1808 and 1888. The online library catalog record shows the first page of the book, which is written in ink, in a formal early nineteenth century hand, and two later pages from the book, which are written in pencil, in a casual modern hand. The recipes on the first page include Pulled Pigeon and Wafers baked in an iron, both of which emerged many decades prior to 1808. The later pages include a recipe for Oyster Cocktail, or oysters on the half shell, served on shaved ice with a tomato-based cocktail sauce similar to seafood sauces outlined in cookbooks today. The book also contains medical recipes, many copied from various print journals.
