The bulk of this 156-page volume consists of a ledger compiled in 1816-1817 by James Howlett (ca. 1772-1838), who was likely a sheriff or magistrate in Petersburg, Virginia. The ledger principally contains the tax account balances of citizens in Chesterfield County and Petersburg, Virginia, but it also contains a list of enslaved persons who were part of an estate of which Howlett was the executor, and second list of enslaved persons who were rented and hired out by two individuals. An unknown individual entered a number of recipes in the volume, likely in the years following Howlett's death. At the back of the volume, another unknown individual wrote 1861 accounts for the sale of butter.
