Description
Isabella Maitland Dunlop (1811-1880) was a daughter of Robert Maitland (1768-1846) and Susannah Harrison Maitland (1780-1812). Her father, who was born in Scotland, was a wealthy New York City merchant. Her mother, who died at age 33, when Isabella was one year old, was a niece of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first governor of Virginia. Isabella Maitland married James Dunlop (1805-1870) in 1830 and bore nine or ten children between 1833 and 1854. She aided Confederate soldiers in her hometown of Petersburg, Virginia, during the Civil War and was fondly remembered by them.

This collection also includes recipe books compiled by Isabella Maitland's daughters Isabella Matoaca Dunlop Spotswood (1848-1922) and Catherine Mary Dunlop (1854-1911).
