Ruth Erwin Welman Reid's recipe book contains culinary recipes and some medical recipes. The library has dated the book 1848-1849 on the basis of dates appearing on the flyleaves and in some of the recipes, but the book may have been continued later. .

Ruth Erwin Welman Reid (1811-1898) was the wife of John Hope Reid (1800-1848), a Scottish-born Savannah cotton merchant. The couple married in 1829 and had six children, all of whom lived into adulthood and three of whom survived the death of their mother. Ruth Erwin Reid lived her entire life in Savannah.
