The recipe and account book kept by Sophia Allen (1798-1876) is part of the library's collections of the papers of George A. Allen (1766-1846), a blacksmith of Burlington, Vermont. Sophia Allen was George Allen's second wife. The couple had three children, all of whom lived into adulthood. Herself a widow when she married George Allen, Sophia married a third time after George Allen's death, to Ira Allen (1791-1874), who was apparently no relation to her second husband. The recipes in Sophia's book, dated 1844-1846 by the library, focus on cakes, cookies, puddings, and other sweets.
