Description
This recipe book contains over 130 recipes written on approximately 62 pages. It includes at least six references to persons with the surname Whitehead or with the surname initial "W," which suggests that it may have been compiled within the Whitehead family. The book is in a single hand, except possibly for some additions at the end, as well as seven recipes that have been pasted in at the back. The sources of many recipes are noted, including John Evans of Brixton (a neighborhood of London), the organist of Surrey Chapel (located in London), and Dr. Rayner of Paris. Some recipes are dated from 1844 to 1845. Most of the recipes are medical, veterinary, or practical. However, there are also culinary recipes for coconut cakes, potatoes, Harvey's sauce, curry powder, ginger beer, lemonade, and wines of elderberries, parsnips, and malt.
